Man Utd Legend Solskjaer 'Open' to Management Return in Soon-To-Be Vacant Role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has expressed interest in a major managerial role, one that he would love to take on in the future.

The former Manchester United striker and manager has been out of the coaching spotlight since his dismissal from Old Trafford in November 2021.

Over the summer, the 51-year-old Norwegian was linked to roles at Besiktas and Leicester City, but he now has his sights set on a different position—managing the Norway national team.

Solskjaer, who famously scored the winning goal in Manchester United’s 1999 Champions League final, is eager to return to management and embrace the pressures of top-level football once again.

Current Norway coach, Stale Solbakken, announced earlier this month that he plans to step down after the 2026 World Cup campaign. This departure could happen either after the qualifiers or, if Norway qualifies, following the tournament in North America.

Solskjaer has hinted that he would be more than willing to consider stepping in when Solbakken’s tenure ends.

In an interview with Norwegian outlet NRK, Solskjaer said, “I am a proud Norwegian. If the opportunity arises when Stale decides he’s ready to move on, I would be happy to have a conversation about it.”

The former Cardiff and Molde manager also emphasized that taking the right job with the right team is crucial to him. “It just has to be the right opportunity, and I depend on working with the right people,” he added.

Though Solskjaer is open to managing Norway, he also hasn’t ruled out a return to Manchester United. When asked about the possibility, he stated, “If your family calls, of course, you will help. I would say ‘yes’ any day of the week.”

Solskjaer remains optimistic about his future in management and finds inspiration in Solbakken’s own outlook. The current Norway boss, now 56, commented on his decision to step down, saying, “While I’m still young and energetic, I want to try something new. I’ve turned down club offers that were tempting, but I want to give this one last shot.”
