Eagles Could Make Trade With Raiders For Dallas Goedert Successor
The Philadelphia Eagles may turn to the Las Vegas Raiders as they look to reshape their tight end position. After releasing cornerbacks Darius Slay and James Bradberry to free up cap space, general manager Howie Roseman appears to be positioning the team for key roster moves. With roughly $28 million in effective cap space for 2025, the Eagles rank in the top 20 heading into free agency. However, with $267.4 million already committed to player salaries—second only to the Cleveland Browns—Philadelphia faces tough financial decisions to remain competitive.
One potential cost-saving move involves 30-year-old tight end Dallas Goedert, who remains productive but carries an $11.8 million cap hit for the upcoming season. By designating him as a post-June 1 cut, the Eagles could save over $4 million by spreading his dead cap charges across two years. They could also explore a trade or a contract extension to lessen his immediate cap impact.
Marissa Myers of The Wright Way Network suggests that Raiders tight end Michael Mayer could be an ideal replacement. A former Notre Dame star and the 35th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Mayer has shown promise in his first two seasons but has been overshadowed by 2024 first-round pick Brock Bowers. Mayer’s ability as both a blocker and receiver, combined with his affordable rookie contract, makes him an attractive target for the Eagles. At 6-foot-4, he would provide Jalen Hurts with another dynamic weapon while bringing long-term stability to the position.
Philadelphia struggled with tight end depth in 2024, primarily relying on Goedert and Grant Calcaterra, with E.J. Jenkins fluctuating between the practice squad and active roster. Adding Mayer would immediately bolster the group, giving the Eagles a younger and more cost-effective option at the position.
