Football pundit Ally McCoist has come to the defense of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, arguing that the midfielder didn’t deserve a red card during their 4-1 defeat to Tottenham in the London derby.
Despite a moment of frustration from Kudus, McCoist believes the punishment was too harsh.
Kudus had given the Hammers an early lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but the Spurs equalized through Dejan Kulusevski before halftime.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou made key changes during the break, introducing Pape Matar Sarr, and Tottenham came back strong, scoring a quick succession of goals.
Yves Bissouma put the home side ahead, followed by an own goal from West Ham’s Alphonse Areola, and Son Heung-min sealed the victory by the 60th minute.
As frustration grew for West Ham, Kudus was involved in a late altercation with Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven.
Kudus appeared to kick van de Ven while battling for the ball, then slapped him during the ensuing scuffle.
Initially shown a yellow card, VAR intervened and upgraded the decision to a red card, resulting in his dismissal. Van de Ven was also booked for retaliating by shoving Kudus.
Speaking on TNT Sports, McCoist disagreed with the decision: “I’ll be honest, I’m probably old-school. Give him a booking and let’s get on with the game.”
Kudus is now facing a three-match ban for violent conduct, which will be a major blow for West Ham and manager Julen Lopetegui.
However, Mike Dean suggested on Sky Sports that Kudus could face further disciplinary action—once for the initial incident and again for his reaction toward van de Ven.
The 24-year-old has been a key figure for West Ham this season, starting every Premier League match. He also scored in their recent 4-1 win over Ipswich.
With Kudus likely suspended, West Ham will be without him for crucial upcoming matches, including trips to Old Trafford, Nottingham Forest, and a clash with Everton.
The defeat to Spurs leaves West Ham with just two wins from their opening eight Premier League games, adding pressure to their season.
