Arsenal legend reveals who inspired his coaching career

Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira has revealed that Arsenal and Arsene Wenger weren’t the main inspiration for his new coaching career, stating another club as the bigger influence in his journey to the managerial hot seat in south London.

Asked by the Guardian if Arsenal was the biggest influence on his coaching career, Vieira said: “Not really. When I was 20 and working with Arsene he gave me that confidence I needed to express myself and he made me grow as a person as well. He made me understand the mistakes I was making.

“But wanting to go into coaching – that came later when I was at City. They made me understand that I had a lot to give back to football.”

“And Brian Marwood was fantastic. If I really have somebody to thank for the journey so far it would be him.”

Vieira says he has never been invited back to Arsenal, and again said he was grateful for the clubs and individuals who have supported his coaching ambitions over the last decade.

“I don’t know – that is a question you should ask them,” he said about Arsenal’s lack of support.

“When I decided to move into that journey of becoming a manager there are options and choices and you just follow your route. Today that journey has taken me to Crystal Palace and I’m very grateful to have been given the opportunity.”

Despite his reluctance to credit his French compatriot as his main influence, this hasn’t stopped his former manager backing his pupil for the future Arsenal job in the long-term.
