Brett Favre the Reason Aaron Rodgers is Dragging Out Steelers Decision

At the start of free agency, several teams were interested in acquiring four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. However, nearly a month later, his choices appear to be narrowed down to either signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers or retiring. The 41-year-old quarterback has been in no rush to finalize his decision, seemingly prolonging the process.

Rodgers visited the Steelers over a week ago, spending more than six hours in discussions with general manager Omar Khan, head coach Mike Tomlin, and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Despite leaving without a contract, reports suggest the Steelers are optimistic about securing him—especially after news surfaced that Rodgers held a throwing session with newly signed $132 million receiver DK Metcalf at UCLA.

While Rodgers appears to be weighing his options, a report from the Daily Mail sheds light on why he’s stalling. According to sources, his hesitation is largely influenced by a conversation with Brett Favre, the very quarterback he replaced in Green Bay. “Aaron has spoken with Brett about the pros and cons of joining Pittsburgh or Minnesota,” a source revealed. “Initially, Aaron was firmly against going to Minnesota because he didn’t want to follow in Brett’s footsteps. However, he has since become more open to the idea.”

Rodgers reportedly knows Pittsburgh remains a viable option but is holding out hope that Minnesota reconsiders. However, the Vikings, who selected J.J. McCarthy in the first round of the 2024 draft, appear set on moving forward without Rodgers. Nevertheless, he seems determined to test their resolve.

Many anticipate Rodgers will make his decision before the 2025 NFL Draft on April 26. However, Tomlin confirmed that the Steelers have not imposed any strict deadline, stating, “We haven’t really approached it from a deadline standpoint. Of course, you’d like to have clarity, but deadlines don’t always provide that.”
