Ex-Tiger returns to Auburn football’s Pro Day after transferring last offseason and dominates

Wesley Steiner, who transferred to Washington State after the 2023 season, made a strong impression at Auburn football’s Pro Day, showcasing his elite athleticism despite spending his final college season away from the Plains.

According to AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus, Steiner stood out in multiple drills, putting together one of the most dominant performances of the event.

“After spending his final college season away from Auburn, Steiner had arguably the best performance out of all of Monday’s participants,” Rauterkus wrote.

Back at Auburn for the showcase, Steiner posted the top marks in the vertical jump, broad jump, and 40-yard dash, while also recording the third-most bench press reps among participants.

Unrealized Potential

Steiner’s athletic ability has never been in question, but throughout his college career, his biggest challenge was mastering defensive schemes rather than motivation or effort. Under multiple head coaches and defensive coordinators, he struggled to find consistency, leading to limited snaps at Washington State.

Though he recorded 46 tackles in 2022, he never fully recaptured that form under Ron Roberts at Auburn. However, former WSU head coach Jake Dickert, now at Wake Forest, recognized Steiner’s raw potential last summer.

Elite Athleticism on Display

“Wes has proven throughout this summer to be one of the freakiest athletes I’ve ever seen,” Dickert said in July. “He power-cleaned 405 pounds from the floor—just incredible. Coach Ben (Iannacchione) has never seen it. He’s fast. He’s agile. I’m excited to see it translate out on the field.”

Now, the key for Steiner is catching the attention of NFL scouts. His dominant showing at Auburn’s Pro Day has certainly put him back on the radar, and with his athletic gifts, he could be an intriguing prospect heading into the draft.
