Angered Yankees Fans React to Sunday’s Gerrit Cole Injury Update
New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole admitted feeling “concerned” about a right elbow injury, and unfortunately, the worst-case scenario may be unfolding. According to MLB insider Jim Bowden, Cole has been advised to undergo Tommy John surgery, though both he and the team are seeking a second opinion. If he proceeds with the procedure, Cole will not only miss the entire season but could also be sidelined for the start of 2025.
Cole’s injury adds to an already extensive Yankees injury list. Giancarlo Stanton (elbows) is trying to avoid season-ending surgery, Luis Gil is out indefinitely with a severe lat strain, and DJ LeMahieu (calf) and Scott Effross (hamstring) are also facing extended absences. The news has left many Yankees fans in despair. “Our season may be over before it even starts,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter). Another comment read, “With Big G possibly out and now Cole, I don’t see the Yankees making the playoffs.” Others were equally pessimistic, with one fan writing, “Well, this season was nice while it lasted. No Soto, no Stanton, no Cole. Guess we’re looking at 2026 now.”
In Cole’s absence, former Braves All-Star Max Fried is the likely Opening Day starter. Carlos Rodón and Clarke Schmidt are locked into the rotation, with Marcus Stroman expected to join them. Meanwhile, Allan Winans, Carlos Carrasco, and top prospect Will Warren are battling for the fifth spot. Amid the frustration, one fan sarcastically suggested, “Haven’t even made it to Opening Day and Yankees fans are already in shambles. First Stanton, now Cole—better wrap Judge in bubble wrap.”
