Celtics star sheds light on mysterious illness keeping him out
Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis provided insight on Monday regarding the illness that has kept him out of action for the past few weeks.
Porzingis has been absent for the Celtics’ last six games due to what the team has described as a “non-COVID illness.” Since his last appearance on Feb. 26, the Latvian big man has been listed as “day-to-day,” but he has now missed two consecutive weeks of play.
On Monday, Porzingis addressed his health concerns on his official X account, revealing that he has been dealing with an unidentified viral illness. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his condition, he reassured fans that he is on the mend.
“I have been dealing with some viral illness that we haven’t been able to fully identify yet,” Porzingis shared. “I am recovering and getting better. But still working my way back to full strength to help this team. Thanks for support and Im hoping for a healthy return soon.”
Earlier this season, Porzingis was also sidelined for the first month of the year as he recovered from offseason ankle surgery. In his 32 games played this season, the Celtics center has averaged 18.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks while shooting 47.4% from the field and a career-best 40.3% from three-point range.
Despite Porzingis’ absence, the Celtics have fared well, winning five of their last six games. Overall, Boston holds an impressive 27-6 record without him in the lineup this season.
The extended time off could prove beneficial for both Porzingis and the Celtics. With Boston comfortably securing the second seed in the Eastern Conference, there is little at stake in the season’s final stretch. If he fully recovers, his time away could help ensure he is fresh and ready for the playoffs.
