College Basketball Analyst Gives Update About Rodney Terry’s Future
The Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team is at risk of missing the 2025 NCAA Tournament, which could put head coach Rodney Terry’s future in jeopardy. CBS Sports analyst Matt Norlander reported on Saturday that Terry’s job in Austin is uncertain, emphasizing that he would need a strong March performance to retain his position.
This update followed Texas’ 83-67 loss to Georgia, a defeat that further diminished their tournament chances, according to some bracket analysts. The Longhorns have struggled in SEC play, losing seven of their last nine games, with five of those losses by at least eight points.
Terry was promoted to full-time head coach in 2023 after leading Texas to the Elite Eight as an interim coach following Chris Beard’s midseason firing. He then guided the Longhorns to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, entering their first SEC campaign with high expectations. However, this season has been a major letdown, with the team suffering a three-game losing streak to start conference play.
One source of frustration is the underutilization of freshman standout Tre Johnson, who recently surpassed Kevin Durant’s single-game freshman scoring record. Currently sitting at 16-13 with two regular-season games remaining, Texas’ best chance to reach the NCAA Tournament is by winning the SEC Tournament. If the Longhorns fail to make a deep run in Nashville, athletic director Chris Del Conte may decide to move on from Terry.
