Eagles set to release Super Bowl champion cornerback Darius Slay
The Philadelphia Eagles have released six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, according to multiple sources. This move comes shortly after the team’s Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, where the Eagles secured a 40-22 win, earning Slay his first championship ring.
Slay, 34, had one year remaining on his contract. The release, designated as post-June 1, will save the Eagles $4.3 million in salary cap space.
In the 2024 season, Slay played 14 games, recording 49 tackles and 13 passes defensed. Notably, he did not register an interception during the regular season for the first time since his rookie year. However, he did secure a crucial interception in the Wild Card Round against the Green Bay Packers, contributing to a 22-10 victory.
Throughout his career, Slay has amassed 28 interceptions and 160 passes defensed over 177 games, with 167 starts, during his tenures with both the Detroit Lions and the Eagles.
His release is part of the Eagles’ broader strategy to navigate salary cap constraints and invest in younger talent. The team is expected to rely more on players on rookie contracts to maintain competitiveness.
Slay has expressed interest in returning to the Detroit Lions, where he spent the first seven seasons of his career. In a recent interview, he mentioned that Detroit feels like his “second home” and that he would consider rejoining the team.
The Lions, facing potential changes in their secondary with several cornerbacks approaching free agency, might view a reunion with Slay as a strategic move to bolster their defense.
As a free agent, Slay is expected to attract interest from multiple teams seeking to enhance their secondary with a veteran presence. His experience and leadership could be valuable assets for franchises aiming to strengthen their defensive units in the upcoming season.
