Daniel Ogunmodede, the head coach of Remo Stars, has voiced his dissatisfaction with the remuneration of coaches in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
In a candid interview with Brila, the coach, popularly known as Ijaball, described the pay for NPFL coaches as “extremely not encouraging” and cited it as a significant factor hindering the league’s development.
Ogunmodede, who has been at the helm of Remo Stars since August 2022, highlighted the stark disparity in coaches’ salaries between Nigeria and Rwanda.
He pointed out that while coaches in Rwanda earn between $10,000 and $15,000, their Nigerian counterparts receive less than a million naira, equivalent to less than $1,000. This vast difference, he believes, is a major reason why the NPFL has not progressed as expected.
The coach emphasized that expecting high performance from coaches with meager resources is unsustainable. He argued that better pay for coaches would significantly contribute to the league’s growth and development.
Ogunmodede also suggested that the league could benefit greatly if former Super Eagles players ventured into coaching, bringing their wealth of experience and expertise to the NPFL.
Under Ogunmodede’s leadership, Remo Stars had a commendable run in the inaugural Naija Super 8 competition, reaching the final but ultimately losing to Sporting Lagos.
Despite the team’s performance, Ogunmodede took responsibility for their results, demonstrating his commitment to the team’s success.
His call for better remuneration for NPFL coaches comes at a crucial time as the league continues to struggle with growth and development.
With experienced coaches like Finidi George, Sunday Oliseh, and Emmanuel Amuneke potentially joining the league, their expertise and knowledge could lead to improved performances and a more competitive environment.
As the NPFL evolves, recognizing the importance of coaches in the development of the game and providing them with the necessary resources to excel is essential.
Ensuring fair and competitive salaries for coaches could be a significant step toward realizing the league’s full potential.
