Frenkie de Jong has expressed his frustration with the media’s coverage of him and Barcelona, particularly regarding transfer links and speculation about his earnings at the club.
Despite joining Barcelona in 2019 after an impressive spell at Ajax, he has been frequently linked with moves away, with Manchester United and Chelsea often mentioned.
De Jong, however, has been firm in his commitment to Barcelona and has criticized the media for what he perceives as inaccurate reporting.
He has made it clear that he is focused on his role at Barcelona and is not interested in speculation about his future.
“If I’m honest, I am getting quite irritated lately,’ De Jong said. ‘I am very angry at what you (media) write or say about me. There are a lot of stories that are simply not true. I simply can’t get my head around it. Some of you write lies all the time and I don’t get how you are not ashamed about it.
“There’s a lot of talk about my contract situation and my salary. There’s a lot of smoke in there and plenty of lies. You the media are saying that I earn around £34.3million-per-year (€40m-per-year)… this is really far from the truth. I am not going to reveal figures, but that’s simply lying.
“I am really happy here. Barcelona was and is the club of my life, it was my dream to play here and it still is. I am not happy with the press and everything that surrounds the club because, as I’ve been saying, it’s full of lies.”
Reports from Spain suggested that Frenkie de Jong had been given an ultimatum to either bring in an offer for his transfer or sign a new contract, amid concerns over his wages at Barcelona.
Despite interest from Manchester United and Chelsea in the past, De Jong opted to stay with Barcelona.
However, recent comments from the midfielder indicate that he may be willing to remain at Barcelona, casting doubt on the interest from these clubs. With Xavi set to leave at the end of the season, there could be significant changes at Barcelona in the summer.
Despite a run of poor results earlier in the season, including defeats to Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal, Xavi has overseen an improvement in form with three games undefeated.
