Lionel Messi‘s triumph in the Ballon d’Or was widely celebrated in the football world. Even his main competitors for the award, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappé, publicly congratulated him on their social media profiles.

However, as is often the case, there were some exceptions to this positive reception. On Tuesday, October 31, one of the most prominent voices of dissent emerged, and it was none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. He liked and added laughing emojis to a post that featured statements from Spanish journalist Tomás Roncero, who claimed that Messi didn’t deserve this Ballon d’Or or any of the previous ones.

Ronaldo, who played a match with AI-Nassr that day, faced shouts from the rival team’s fans in support of Messi. In response, CR7 gestured for silence by putting his finger to his lips.

Another notable figure in the football world who criticized Messi’s Ballon d’Or win is Lothar Matthaus, a former German midfielder who has experienced the glory of winning both a World Cup and a Ballon d’Or.

In the last hours, the German stated:

“Throughout last year, Haaland performed better than Messi. It is undeserved that Messi has won. The election is a farce, although I am a Messi fan.”

These words spread rapidly worldwide, and Lionel Messi faced disapproval from thousands of his fans.

Among those who made the most noise in response was Angel Di Maria, who expressed his thoughts in a comment on Olé newspaper’s post.

“Cry somewhere else, was the message that the Benfica winger dedicated to Matthaus.”
