The pay-TV platforms DStv and GOtv, which feature SuperSport channels, have confirmed that they will broadcast all 52 games of the upcoming AFCON, despite an earlier announcement indicating that they had not secured the TV rights for the event.
SuperSport had not been airing any CAF-related events since last year, including the World Cup qualifiers in Africa.
However, the South Africa-based broadcaster recently announced on its X handle that they will indeed broadcast the AFCON games, using the popular phrase “no gree for anybody,” which has become widely used in 2024.
The post said, “No gree for anybody! Watch all 52 matches of the #afcon2023 on @supersports”.
This development implies that there will be multiple avenues to watch the AFCON in Nigeria, providing viewers with more options beyond relying solely on StarTimes.
Initially, when SuperSport’s inability to secure the TV rights for the AFCON was announced earlier in 2024, it led to frustration and disappointment among fans.
At that time, New World TV, a sports channel on a different pay-TV platform, StarTimes, was revealed as the exclusive channel in Sub-Saharan Africa for broadcasting the 34th edition of the competition.
“The media rights agreement with New World TV is the biggest investment by a pan-African broadcaster in CAF’s history,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
The distribution of broadcast rights has now expanded, providing viewers with a variety of options.
New World TV’s exclusive rights to AFCON coverage have been rescinded, as other platforms have emerged to offer streaming services for the tournament in Nigeria and across Africa.
