As quarter-final ties go this was a fairly straightforward evening for the Three Lions, who ran out 4-0 winners at the Stadio Olimpico and will meet Denmark in the last four.

Kane got the night off to a fine start with an early strike before heading in his second shortly after Harry Maguire had doubled the lead immediately after half-time.

A dream start for England!

Sterling plays in Kane and he finishes it with his toe. He was reaching and stretching, but got enough on it. Perfect start!

Before match

Gareth Southgate could revert to a back four against Ukraine after going like-for-like against Germany with the three-man defence that served England so well at the last World Cup.

That would give more room to reintroduce Mason Mount, who missed out on Tuesday after returning from self-isolation as a Covid-19 precaution just 24 hours earlier.

There are also increased calls for Jack Grealish to start Saturday’s Euro 2020 quarter-final in Rome after his game-changing introduction against Germany at Wembley, calls which could be heightened by Bukayo Saka’s knock in training.

Southgate also has decisions to make about four players walking a tightrope on yellow cards – Harry Maguire, Declan Rice, Kalvin Phillips and Phil Foden.

Team news

As expected, Sancho is given his first start while England revert to a back four. Mount returns.

For Ukraine, Mykolenko comes in for Stepanenko as Zinchenko moves into midfield.

Suspensions list

Maguire, Foden, Rice and Phillips will be suspended for England if they pick up another yellow card in Rome, while Ukraine quartet Sergiy Sydorchuk, Mykola Shaparenko, Andriy Yarmolenko and Artem Dovbyk run the same risk.

England vs Ukraine prediction

England are yet to concede a goal and, one Thomas Muller chance aside which they inflicted upon themselves, have rarely looked like doing so after four games.

Ukraine toiled for a further 30 minutes on Tuesday night, and looked exhausted before that.

England have enough in them to hold their opponents’ at arm’s length and pick them off.
