Back toward the beginning of December, it was officially declared that Floyd Mayweather and YouTuber Logan Paul would do a exhibition on Feb. 20, 2021, and keeping in mind that there has not yet been an authority declaration, it’s currently expected that the occasion is being deferred to a later date in any event.
Speaking on The Night Shift Gaming a few days ago, the 25-year-old Paul seemed to confirm that the bout is not happening on Feb. 20, but multiple outlets are reporting that it won’t be going down as planned, and considering that date is in a few weeks and there has been basically zero promotion of this thing, it’s not unexpected.
“I’ve been a little upset with the narrative I’m seeing online, a little fucking upset, so I’ll clear this up,” Paul said. “It’s just stupid. A guy who we had come to test to be a strength and conditioning coach leaked information about the fight. As soon as this got out, he said that the fight was being (postponed), I said, ‘Fuck, we’ve had a leak from inside our camp, no one else was supposed to know that.’
“Then the narrative changed to, ‘Floyd Mayweather and Logan Paul fight postponed due to lack of interest.’ Lack of interest? What the fuck? There’s not been a fight that’s made this much noise the whole year.”

If by “the whole year” he means 2021, which is four weeks old, well — actually even that isn’t a slam dunk to be true. The reality is this exhibition really hasn’t made near as much noise as anyone — including myself — expected. Basically, it was announced, and then it kind of went away. There’s been no promotional work whatsoever from the Mayweather side, though Paul has held up his end as much as he can. Really, Logan’s brother Jake Paul has gotten way more mileage out of trash-talking Conor McGregor and signing to fight Ben Askren in April.
Paul insists the exhibition will still happen, saying, “There are a lot of people involved and you’ve only got one shot at it, so you need to get it absolutely, 1,000 percent right. We’re just making sure we’re doing that. But yeah, I’m still going to beat the shit out of Floyd Mayweather, or maybe he’s going to beat the shit out of me, who knows? The point is it’s still going to happen.”
Just as an outside observation, I’ll add this: Mayweather can be very sensitive about his image as far as being considered the top money man and draw in the game, and if early online pay-per-views weren’t tracking the way he or his team might have liked — specifically, if they weren’t tracking to do as well as Mike Tyson vs Roy Jones Jr did in November — that could absolutely play a part. Mayweather is without question the undisputed king of pay-per-view sales all time, that’s just a fact, but he’s also not the sort of celebrity that Mike Tyson is, and Logan Paul, while well-known in his field for sure, is only going to bring so many people in as far as paying for a half-pretend boxing match.

And if they were looking at relatively underwhelming numbers, waiting and resetting the promotion would frankly be a smart move. Maybe there’s a better time for it in a few months, or six months, or late in the year, whatever.
So we’ll see. Personally, I’ve been waiting on this thing to be officially postponed for a couple of weeks now, and while we haven’t quite gotten there with an official announcement or anything, it seems pretty clear this won’t take place on Feb. 20.
