Former Auburn linebacker chosen for College Football Hall of Fame

Former Auburn linebacker Gregg Carr has been selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame as part of the 2025 class. Carr is one of five new members from the Southeastern Conference (SEC) announced by the National Football Foundation on Wednesday. He joins fellow SEC honorees, former Tennessee defensive tackle John Henderson and former Ole Miss offensive tackle Terrence Metcalf, among the 18 players named to this year’s class.

Also included in the 2025 class are coaches Nick Saban, who had already been announced, and Urban Meyer, with Saban’s career including national championships at LSU and Alabama, while Meyer led Florida to BCS titles in 2006 and 2008. Other notable inductees include Texas defensive back Michael Huff, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, and Notre Dame quarterback Terry Hanratty, among others.

Carr’s college career peaked in 1984 when he was a consensus All-American and a first-team All-SEC selection for two consecutive years. He was part of Auburn’s SEC championship-winning team in 1983 and ranks second on the school’s all-time tackles list. Carr also excelled in academics, being named a National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete in 1984, before transitioning to a career in surgery after playing four seasons in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Henderson, who won the Outland Trophy as the nation’s top interior lineman in 2000, and Metcalf, a consensus All-American at offensive tackle for Ole Miss, also received recognition in the 2025 class.

The SEC now boasts 107 players and 31 coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame, with the 2025 class reflecting the continued excellence of SEC football. Notably, several former SEC stars, including Alabama’s Mark Ingram and Auburn’s Takeo Spikes, were not selected this year.
