‘Go to court’ – Pep Guardiola slams Jurgen Klopp after City’s 1-0 loss

'Go to court' - Pep Guardiola slams Jurgen Klopp after City's 1-0 loss

Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola on Sunday reacted to Jurgen Klopp’s criticism over a breach of Financial Fair Play rules. Guardiola said Liverpool should “go to court” if they don’t like his club’s expensive transfer moves.

In a recent interview, Klopp claimed Guardiola has no limits in his spending, indicating an unfair advantage for the Man City manager.

In response, Guardiola said Manchester City strictly follow the Financial Fair Play protocols and are just backed by good ownership.

“Some owners want to benefit, our owners don’t want any benefits. So they don’t invest in the team, while we invest what we can. Before there were only one or two clubs. Now there is Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich and our club with Sheikh Mansour. They want to be buying into football. What is the problem? We have limits for Financial Fair Play and if they don’t agree [with City’s spending] they can go to court and make a statement,” said Guardiola after City’s Premier League opener Sunday, Goal reported.

Manchester City traveled to North London to take on Tottenham Hotspur for their opening fixture of the 2021-22 Premier League. The reigning champions suffered a 1-0 loss, thanks to the winner from Spurs’ Son Heung-min.

“We bought Jack Grealish because we sold [players] for £60million ($83m) so, in the end, we have spent £40m. We follow absolutely the rules. At our club, the owners don’t want to lose money of course but they want to spend, so we can do it. Years ago, when Manchester United won a lot of titles, it was because they spent more money than other clubs. Do you remember that? At that moment Man City couldn’t do it because we did not have the owners we have now,” added Guardiola.

Manchester City created headlines in the Premier League when they made former Aston Villa captain the English top-flight league’s first-ever £100 million ($139m) player.

Earlier, Liverpool boss Klopp accused Manchester City of not having any limits in the transfer window.

“We are allowed to spend the money we earn… they obviously don’t have any limits,” Klopp was quoted by The Telegraph as saying after being asked about his club’s plans for the remainder of the 2021 summer market.

Even after signing Grealish for a huge transfer fee, the Eithad side is still in the market on the lookout for a big-money striker. Meanwhile, Liverpool have bought RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate for $50million, lost Gini Wijnaldum on a free trasnfer and sold several fringe platers but have made very few moves for a new signing.
