Juan Mata has cautioned Bruno Fernandes he’ll have to stand by essentially one more year before he can get his hands on the No.8 shirt at Manchester United.
Mata, 33, is set to hold his #1 squad number next season subsequent to writing a one-year contract extension, no doubt stirring up a lot of consternation for his dear companion and colleague.
Fernandes kidded last week the lone drawback to Mata signing another arrangement at United was the reality he’d keep the No.8 shirt number which he needs for himself.
- Juventus and Barcelona out for Arsenal striker Aubameyang
- Chelsea hand transfer boost to sign this Juventus defender
- Man Utd miss Cristiano Ronaldo hint as they lose transfer battle to Liverpool
“I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year,” Fernandes joked on social media, reacting to Mata’s extension.
Before adding: “Congrats brother!! Well deserved! An example and an inspiration on and off the pitch.”
Now the Spaniard has given his take on the situation and reiterated that Fernandes might need to wait even longer than a year if he manages to earn another new contract.
“At least another year!” Mata joked in an interview with official club media.
“I think he’s happy that I’m staying and I’m happy to be playing with him. We’ve got a great relationship since he came and, of course, he’s been brilliant for us on and off the pitch. He’s also a great guy and an example for others.
“Unfortunately for him, he will have to be patient!”
