Erik ten Hag remains confident that Manchester United should not be judged too harshly despite their challenging start to the season, following a dramatic 3-3 draw against Porto.
The Red Devils took an early lead in Portugal, with quick goals from Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.
However, Porto mounted a comeback, with goals from Pepe and a brace by Samu Omorodion.
Bruno Fernandes’ second red card in as many games added to United’s woes, but Harry Maguire’s late header salvaged a point for Ten Hag’s side in their second Europa League draw of the campaign.
United have struggled in European competition this season, surrendering leads in both of their matches, leaving them without a win in five consecutive European games (D3 L2).
This winless streak has left them 21st in the league table, increasing the pressure on Ten Hag, whose team is now without a victory in their last four matches across all competitions.
Despite mounting criticism, Ten Hag remains optimistic about United’s ability to bounce back.
Speaking to TNT Sports, he said, “We will get there. Don’t judge us in this moment, judge us at the end of the season. We are in the process, and we will improve. We’ve had two seasons where we’ve reached finals, and we will continue to fight.”
Ten Hag praised the team’s spirit and unity, but acknowledged areas that need improvement: “You see the spirit and connection between the staff and the team. The players are together, with a strong mentality, but in some defensive areas, we need to step up.”
Harry Maguire, who scored his first goal of the season in the 91st minute to secure the draw, also expressed support for Ten Hag, despite the pressure.
“I’ve played for this club for six years; I know how it works. When you’re on a bad run, players and the manager come under scrutiny,” Maguire said. “He’s experienced enough and knows how to deal with it. It’s part of the privilege of playing for this club.”
As Manchester United continues to navigate their rough patch, Ten Hag remains focused on long-term progress, asking fans and critics alike to reserve judgment until the end of the season.
