Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has decided to retire, and according to his former France teammate Hugo Lloris, the decision came after years of battling physical challenges.
Varane, who surprised many by retiring at just 31, had long fought against his body’s limitations. Lloris, speaking to L’Equipe, praised Varane for his resilience both on and off the pitch.
“When Raphael was on the field, we rarely lost. He brought a sense of reassurance to the team, but beyond his performances, what stood out was everything he did behind the scenes,” Lloris explained.
The former Tottenham goalkeeper continued, “We saw him constantly fight against his physical condition, dedicating himself to injury prevention and strength training. It required immense time, energy, and effort. He pushed his body to the limit, and it’s truly remarkable how far he went to maintain his performance level.”
