Ademola Lookman scored twice in the first half to lead Atalanta to a stunning 3-0 victory over Serie A leaders Napoli on Sunday, propelling his team up to second place in the standings.
Lookman, who recently ranked 14th in the Ballon d’Or voting, opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the game with a close-range volley after a precise pass from Charles De Ketelaere.
He doubled Atalanta’s lead around the 30-minute mark, firing a powerful long-range strike from another De Ketelaere setup, following a shot from Scott McTominay that struck the post for Napoli.
Substitute Mateo Retegui sealed the win in stoppage time, converting Raoul Bellanova’s cross to extend Atalanta’s winning streak to five league games.
The victory puts Atalanta provisionally in second place with 22 points, reducing Napoli’s lead at the top to just three points. They now sit one point ahead of third-place Inter and fourth-place Juventus, with Inter having a game in hand.
Heading into the match, Napoli had maintained a perfect home record under new manager Antonio Conte, winning all five home games this season. However, the loss serves as a tough lesson from a strong Scudetto contender.
It marks the first time since 2009 that Conte has lost a home Serie A match by a three-goal margin—the last instance being Atalanta’s 5-2 win over Juventus under his watch.
Lookman was pivotal in Atalanta’s victory and has now been involved in more goals than any other Serie A player in 2024, with 28 contributions (17 goals, 11 assists) across all competitions.
