Manchester United produced an emphatic statement on the opening weekend of the new Premier League season as they thrashed rivals Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford.

A capacity crowd back inside the Theatre of Dreams witnessed a second-half demolition as Bruno Fernandes notched a hat-trick and Paul Pogba laid on four assists in a dream start to the 2021/22 campaign for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men, who finished a distant second behind champions Manchester City in the top-flight last term.

United had only led 1-0 at half-time in Saturday’s early kick-off courtesy of Fernandes, but Mason Greenwood quickly restored their advantage after a sublime strike from Leeds full-back Luke Ayling had briefly levelled proceedings.

Goals Report

GOAL! Manchester United 5-1 Leeds | Fred 68′

68 mins: It just gets worse for Leeds, who have got nothing at all going since Fernandes completed his hat-trick, with Raphinha particularly wasteful.

Pogba gets his FOURTH assist of the day already as he easily picks out Fred, who sweeps home unopposed.

The Frenchman only registered five assists in the Premier League throughout the entirety of last season.

What an opening day for him, Fernandes and United in general… against a fierce rival to boot!

Dreamland stuff.

GOAL! Manchester United 4-1 Leeds | Bruno Fernandes 60′

60 mins: It’s a 60-minute hat-trick on opening day for the Portuguese maestro!

This time he peels away from Koch and is just onside as he collects Lindelof’s long pass before thundering a sublime half-volley beyond Meslier and into the roof of the net.

Utterly, utterly ruthless from Manchester United.

What a statement this is.

GOAL! Manchester United 3-1 Leeds | Bruno Fernandes 53′

53 mins: It’s hard to keep up!

Another fine Pogba assist and Fernandes turns inside before producing a low shot that Ayling desperately tries to clear off the line.

He looks like he’s managed it, but the goal-line technology says otherwise!

It’s over and the goal is given.

A breathless start to this second half.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-1 Leeds | Mason Greenwood 51′

51 mins: They weren’t level for long!

Greenwood restores the hosts’ lead after another stellar Pogba pass on the counter, with the England forward’s low effort across Meslier clipping in off the post in front of the Stretford End.

Just three minutes between those goals!

GOAL! Manchester United 1-1 Leeds | Luke Ayling 48′

48 mins: WHAT A HIT!

Dallas finds Ayling in acres of space and the right-back has enough time to take a touch before rifling an unstoppable right-footed effort into the top corner with De Gea beaten all ends up.

A special, special strike.

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Leeds | | Bruno Fernandes 31′

31 mins: The deadlock is broken!

United easily regain possession at halfway after a poor Meslier goal kick.

McTominay picks out Pogba, who then plays a brilliant lofted pass to seek out the excellent run of Fernandes.

With Koch caught out of position and Struijk unable to cover, the Portuguese takes a deft touch with his right foot before firing off a shot with the left.

It takes a heavy deflection off Meslier, but ends up in the back of the net.

Before match

A hostile rivalry is renewed at Old Trafford this lunchtime in the second fixture of the brand new Premier League season.

Old foes Manchester United and Leeds played out an eight-goal thriller in this same fixture last season, with the hosts triumphing 6-2 after an enthralling and utterly chaotic affair.

There could be similar entertainment on show today, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side eager to put down an early marker as they look to challenge Manchester City’s dominance and mount a title charge after their distant second-place finish in 2020/21.

Manchester United vs Leeds United Line-up

Man United XI: De Gea, Wan Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Fred, Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, James, Greenwood

However, United have still to complete the final formalities of defender Varane’s switch from Real Madrid, so he has yet to train.

“Jadon is going to be involved, definitely,” Solskjaer said on Friday. “He’s had a good week.

“Unfortunately, he was ill after his holiday and we’ve lost out on a few days of training with him.

“But he’s gelled really well in the group and he has looked sharper than we expected almost. He’ll be involved. I can’t tell you if he’s going to start or not, though.”

With Varane yet to be registered, Victor Lindelof should partner Harry Maguire at centre-back.
