Martial given hero’s welcome by AEK fans with flares as Arsenal icon slams star
Anthony Martial Receives Hero’s Welcome in Greece After Joining AEK Athens on Free Transfer
Anthony Martial was greeted like a hero by AEK Athens fans, who lit flares to celebrate his surprising free transfer to the Greek club. The former Manchester United forward has now joined AEK after leaving Old Trafford earlier this summer.
Martial’s departure from United came as his contract expired, allowing him to leave the club as a free agent. His new chapter with AEK Athens adds to an already impressive summer of signings for the ambitious Greek side.
AEK has been busy in the transfer market, securing former Premier League talents Erik Lamela, Roberto Pereyra, and Thomas Strakosha on free transfers. They were also close to signing David Datro Fofana from Chelsea, but negotiations fell through at the last moment.
Despite missing out on Fofana, AEK hit the mark by securing Martial’s signature after his proposed move to Brazilian giants Flamengo collapsed. The former Sevilla loanee arrived in the Greek capital last night, having signed his new contract, and was greeted with a raucous reception.
AEK supporters filled the airport, lighting flares and chanting Martial’s name as he stepped off the plane. The passionate welcome marks the beginning of a new journey for the Frenchman, who will look to revive his career in the Greek Super League.
Martial joined Manchester United in 2015 from Monaco for a fee that could rise to £58 million, setting a transfer record for a teenager at the time. He made an instant impact, scoring 17 goals in 49 appearances during his debut season. However, that would end up being his highest number of appearances in a single campaign at United.
Over the years, Martial struggled with various injuries and inconsistent form. By the end of his time at United, he had managed to score just 90 goals in 317 games. Now, he aims for a fresh start with AEK Athens, where fans are clearly eager to see what he can bring to their squad.
Anthony Martial is looking for a fresh start with AEK Athens, who currently sit at the top of the Greek Super League after four matches. The club finished as runners-up to PAOK last season and is now determined to reclaim the title they last won in 2023.
Despite Martial’s new chapter in Greece, former Arsenal and Chelsea star Emmanuel Petit has raised doubts about whether the French forward still possesses the “desire” to continue his career.
Petit expressed his concerns, saying: “I can’t remember the last time Martial was truly a proper footballer on the pitch, delivering good performances. Maybe he should ask himself this question: Does he have the desire to keep going with his career? Because it seems that the last few years have been very difficult for him both on and off the pitch.”
He added, “It’s challenging to have a positive mindset every morning when you arrive at the training ground, especially when you are dealing with problems in your personal life, issues in the dressing room, and troubles everywhere.
“If I were Anthony Martial, I would look in the mirror and ask myself: Do I still want to be a professional footballer?”

Pogba Set for November Football Return After Winning Appeal—But it won’t be with Juventus
Paul Pogba is gearing up for his first appearance since having his drug ban reduced, as he joins a host of football legends in an exhibition match.
Mail Sport has revealed that the French midfielder’s original four-year ban for testing positive for DHEA, a substance that boosts testosterone and is on WADA’s banned list, has been cut to 18 months by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The initial ban, which stemmed from a positive test in August 2023, had threatened to end Pogba’s career.
With the reduction, Pogba is set to resume training with Juventus in January 2025 and will be eligible to play competitive matches from March 2025.
However, his comeback will happen sooner in a special Legends match in Dubai.
The Kings Cup, scheduled for November 30 at Al Maktoum Stadium, will feature Pogba alongside other football icons. This marks the third edition of the exhibition, which will showcase former World Cup and Champions League winners.
Pogba, John Terry, Roberto Carlos, Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, and David Silva are joining the star-studded lineup.
Pogba, one of the biggest names currently playing, will be subject to special rules during the match, limiting him to just 30 minutes of play. He and Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos will feature for 15 minutes in each half and be exempt from receiving yellow or red cards and the offside rule.

Bruno Fernandes Sends Message to Man United Fans After Back-to-Back Red Cards
Bruno Fernandes has expressed that Manchester United‘s current struggles rank among the “toughest moments” he’s faced since joining the club nearly five years ago.
This marks his first message to fans following his red card in the dramatic 3-3 draw against Porto.
The United captain was sent off for the second consecutive game, receiving his marching orders in the final 10 minutes as the Red Devils sought to claw back after surrendering a 2-0 lead.
This dismissal followed a red card he received just days earlier during the team’s 3-0 loss to Tottenham at Old Trafford for a late tackle on James Maddison—a decision that was eventually overturned by the Premier League.
However, Fernandes will still face a suspension in European competition.
Taking to Instagram to break his silence, Fernandes wrote: “Tough moment as a team and personally for me, one of the hardest. Almost 5 years at the club with ups and downs, good and bad moments.”
He continued, “Throughout my career, I’ve faced challenges and adversities, but one thing that has never changed is my willingness to step up and take responsibility, even in difficult moments.
“I know it sounds like a cliché, and many of you United fans are probably tired of hearing it, but no one is more disappointed with my performances than I am.”
Despite his disappointment, Fernandes took a moment to thank supporters for their positive messages, saying, “Even through this moment, I appreciate all of you who have sent encouraging words of belief in me and the team.”
Before these recent incidents, Fernandes had never been sent off in his Manchester United career. However, his challenge at the Estadio do Dragao was deemed reckless, as he jumped with his studs up to reach the ball, clashing with Porto’s Perez, who had lowered his head to clear the ball.
BBC Radio 5 Live commentator and former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson weighed in on the incident: “Bruno Fernandes was not happy.
He went in high, and it was dangerous. He may have been focused on the ball, but in doing so, he left the referee with no choice.”
Despite Fernandes’ sending-off, United managed to salvage a point thanks to Harry Maguire’s 91st-minute header.
United boss Erik ten Hag, currently under pressure due to a string of poor results, will hope to avoid further setbacks when his side visits Aston Villa this Sunday.
While Fernandes will be available for the Premier League clash, he will miss United’s upcoming European fixture against Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce if Ten Hag remains in charge by then.

Marcus Rashford Breaks Silence on Brutal Half-Time Sub During Porto Draw
Marcus Rashford Speaks Out After Half-Time Substitution in Man Utd‘s Dramatic Draw with Porto
Marcus Rashford has addressed his surprising substitution at halftime during Manchester United’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Porto.
The forward ended a brief goal drought with a first-half goal, showcasing his talent at the Estadio do Dragao.
Rashford opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match, cutting in from the left and slotting a low shot past Porto’s goalkeeper, Diogo Costa.
He continued to be a significant threat, later assisting Rasmus Hojlund for United’s second goal. However, fans were left puzzled when he was replaced by Alejandro Garnacho at the break, especially after Porto managed to equalize at 2-2.
Despite the baffling decision, United salvaged a late point thanks to Harry Maguire’s goal. Following the match, Rashford took to Instagram to share his mixed feelings, writing: “Bitter Sweet. I’m happy to learn that I have broken into the top five scorers in Europe for United. But I’m gutted that we never managed to win tonight.”
Fans flooded the comments section, expressing their support. One wrote, “Proud of you, Rashy; you deserve better,” while another said, “You were a beast tonight; more of that, boy.” A third fan added, “Should’ve never been subbed.”
United manager Erik ten Hag explained the rationale behind the substitution, stating it was part of a “squad rotation.” He noted, “We had to rotate. Garnacho didn’t start, but he had a great game, not only on Sunday but the whole season. We have another tough game on Sunday, so we need players who are fit and fresh.”
Rashford has not played more than 75 minutes since United’s defeat to Liverpool on September 1, completing a full 90 minutes only twice this season.
As Manchester United prepares to face Aston Villa on Sunday, they will encounter a side riding high after defeating Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
The pressure is mounting on Ten Hag as he strives to turn around United’s fortunes following a series of disappointing results.
Maguire’s late equalizer came just hours after he learned he had been excluded from Lee Carsley’s England squad, adding further drama to the match.
