Bruno Fernandes edges out Martin Odegaard as a more creative player and would fit better in Arsenal’s midfield, according to former Liverpool player Danny Murphy.
Both Fernandes and Odegaard are considered top-tier playmakers in the Premier League and across Europe.
Fernandes has made a significant impact since joining Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, contributing 54 goals and 42 assists in 163 Premier League appearances.
Meanwhile, Odegaard, who initially joined Arsenal on loan from Real Madrid in January 2021, has scored 31 goals and provided 23 assists in 125 league games.
Murphy, speaking on talkSPORT Drive, acknowledged both players’ talents but emphasized Fernandes’ superior attacking ability, suggesting the Portuguese star would start over Odegaard in Arsenal’s midfield.
He noted that while the Norwegian is more effective defensively, Fernandes offers an edge in creativity and goal-scoring.
“It’s a matter of preference,” Murphy said when asked who he rates more between the two. “If you had Declan Rice and [Thomas] Partey behind Fernandes, I’d probably go with Bruno.”
He added, “Odegaard is better defensively, and I think [Mikel] Arteta would choose him for that reason. But in terms of creativity, Bruno has the edge. If you have two strong holding midfielders, you wouldn’t need Bruno’s defensive contributions.”
Despite Fernandes’ advantage in stats, Odegaard’s influence has earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Year for the last two seasons.
However, Arsenal fans face a setback as Odegaard is currently sidelined with a significant ankle injury.
Arteta has yet to confirm a return date for the Norwegian, who is set to miss Arsenal’s crucial title clash against Manchester City on Sunday.
