Alabama Football’s Transfer CB Making an Early Impact in Spring Practices
When Alabama landed Cam Calhoun from the transfer portal, the team sought a cornerback with high-level experience. The former Utah defensive back has brought not only that but also an energetic presence in the locker room.
Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack highlighted Calhoun’s smooth transition into Alabama’s system during the first week of spring practice.
“He’s got that Cincinnati edge to him,” Wommack said Friday. “If you’ve recruited that area, you know what I mean. He plays with intensity, attacks the ball, and brings energy to our group. We’re usually a quiet secondary, so it’s great having a guy who plays aggressively.”
Calhoun appeared in 11 games for Utah last season, earning a start against Oklahoma State. He finished the year with 21 tackles, an interception, and a team-high nine pass breakups. The redshirt sophomore initially began his college career at Michigan in 2023, playing in two games.
Alabama safety Bray Hubbard praised Calhoun’s presence on and off the field.
“Cam is something else—always smiling, always talking, but in a good way,” Hubbard said. “He’s a great guy, brings energy to the locker room and the field. He had a strong first week, and he’s only going to keep improving.”
With Malachi Moore headed to the NFL and Keon Sabb and Domani Jackson sidelined by injuries, Alabama’s young secondary is getting valuable reps this spring. Calhoun’s experience has made him stand out even more in the defensive backfield.
Wommack emphasized Calhoun’s maturity and background with a strong defensive program like Utah.
“You can tell he’s a seasoned player,” Wommack said. “Getting on the field at Utah isn’t easy, and he was a starter there. That experience is invaluable for us.”
Alabama will pause spring practice for spring break before resuming ahead of the April 12 A-Day game at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
