Could Cowboys Steal Eagles Lineman in Free Agency Move?

FRISCO – As the Dallas Cowboys ramp up their offseason preparations, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer faces the task of revitalizing the team’s offense. This rebuild begins with the offensive line—a once-dominant group that has declined in recent years and now features mostly young players working to become consistent starters.

That trend was clear in the 2024 season when the Cowboys relied heavily on two rookies, Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe. Veteran Zack Martin began the year in the lineup but saw his season cut short by injury. Martin’s future remains uncertain as he weighs the options of returning to Dallas, testing free agency, or retiring from the NFL.

While Martin may not be the same powerhouse he was a few years ago, finding a replacement at right guard poses a significant challenge. With a largely inexperienced line, the Cowboys might hesitate to rely solely on the draft to fill that gap. Pursuing a seasoned free agent could be the smarter approach.

New offensive line coach Klayton Adams, along with Schottenheimer, has stressed the importance of bringing toughness and physicality to the trenches. The Cowboys might find just that in Philadelphia Eagles right guard Mekhi Becton. After a strong comeback season in 2024, Becton has positioned himself for a well-deserved payday in free agency.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox sees Becton as a potential fit for Dallas: “Becton got a new opportunity in 2024 when the Philadelphia Eagles signed him and moved him to guard. With a new home and a new position, the 25-year-old (26 in April) thrived. The Cowboys should also consider Becton—if they can erase their projected $5.7 million cap deficit—as a potential replacement for Zack Martin.”

The claim about a “cap deficit,” however, seems off. The Cowboys are actually under the cap, set to carry over more than $20 million from 2024, and could create up to $100 million in spending room if needed. Still, there’s some risk in paying Becton his expected average annual salary of $10.2 million—but for a potential cornerstone on the line, it might be a risk worth taking.
