British boxing legend Nigel Benn has announced the death of his brother Mark due to coronavirus.
The ex-two-weight world champion took to social media on Sunday night to confirm the tragic news, paying loving tribute to a man he described as the “joker” of the Benn household.
“My brother Mark passed Away 2day (Covid 19), as we all were growing up Mark was the Joker of the Benn house hold,” he wrote on Instagram alongside a picture of Mark.
“May he Rest In Peace love u Mark.”
Other Benn family members, fans and fellow fighters also paid tribute to Mark Benn and offered their condolences.
As of 9am on Sunday, the Covid-19 death toll in the UK had climbed to 4,934 – a rise of 621 – with 47,806 confirmed positive cases. There have now been more than 69,000 deaths worldwide.
Last week, current British boxer Anthony Yarde urged people to adhere to lockdown measures and stay at home after revealing that his grandmother had died of coronavirus just days after his father had also passed away with the illness.
