Virgil van Dijk has heaped praise on Darwin Nunez for his standout performance in Liverpool’s recent Europa League match against LASK.

Nunez played a pivotal role in the match as Liverpool found themselves trailing 1-0, but Nunez’s contribution turned the tide in their favor, ultimately leading to a 3-1 victory.

Nunez’s crucial moment came in the form of a penalty kick in the second half. Just before Nunez stepped up to take the penalty, Virgil van Dijk briefly held the ball and appeared as though he might take the spot-kick himself. This momentary delay allowed Nunez to maintain his composure and focus on the task at hand.

Van Dijk also emphasized the significance of the mental aspect of these high-pressure moments in matches, highlighting the importance of maintaining one’s composure and mental fortitude when facing critical situations.

He said: “You have to make sure you protect at least the penalty spot. It’s a bit of a mind game there – maybe they were going to try and get in your head.

“It was always the plan that Darwin was going to take it, and I’m glad he scored.”

Van Dijk additionally added that Nunez is beginning to show the world what’s really going on with him:

“Darwin was very important for us against LASK and long may it continue. Up front, the competition is quite good.”

“They all have to push each other and it’s good to see. Everyone has a role to play whether you start or not. Everyone has now seen the potential and the quality he has.”

Liverpool has secured qualification for the 2023/24 Europa League after finishing in fifth place in the Premier League.

As a result, they will be placed in Pot 1 for the group stage draw, which is scheduled to take place in August.

Following Roma’s Europa League final defeat, Jose Mourinho has been given a four-match European ban by UEFA for his abusive behavior towards referee Anthony Taylor.

Mourinho confronted Taylor angrily in the car park at Budapest’s Puskas Arena and insulted him, calling him a ‘f***ing disgrace’.

Subsequently, Taylor and his family were surrounded by a group of aggressive Roma fans inside the terminal at Budapest Airport, and they required police assistance to ensure their safety.

The ban implies that Mourinho will be absent from the touchline for four Europa League group-stage matches in the upcoming season.

However, it remains unclear whether the ban applies solely to the touchline or extends to the stadium as well.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics, and Disciplinary Body released a statement today outlining the penalties imposed on Roma in response to the incident.

Mourinho was specifically cited for “directing abusive language at a match official.”

After Roma’s intense penalty shootout loss, Mourinho unleashed a passionate tirade against referee Anthony Taylor, who is well-known for officiating Premier League matches.

In his post-match comments, Mourinho expressed his belief that Taylor had displayed bias in favor of Sevilla through a series of contentious decisions and even remarked that Taylor “seemed Spanish” to him.

Roma’s supporters were highly agitated towards referee Anthony Taylor, resulting in a distressing encounter. Over a hundred fans surrounded the 44-year-old official and his family as they navigated through the crowd.

Security personnel faced difficulties in maintaining a barrier between Taylor, his family, and the chanting mob.

The situation escalated with the use of offensive language and objects being thrown towards the group. Eventually, they were escorted to their departure gate and able to leave.

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the organization responsible for refereeing in the UK, strongly condemned the incident, labeling it as “unjustified and abhorrent.”

A statement said: “PGMOL is aware of videos circulating on social media showing Anthony Taylor and his family being harassed and abused at Budapest Airport. 

“We are appalled at the unjustified and abhorrent abuse directed at Anthony and his family as he tries to make his way home from refereeing the UEFA Europa League final. We will continue to provide our full support to Anthony and his family.”

Following the incidents involving Roma’s supporters, the club has faced repercussions from UEFA.

They have been fined €50,000 (£43,000) for various infractions, including the lighting of fireworks, throwing of objects, acts of damage, and crowd disturbances.

As a result, Roma will also be banned from selling tickets to their away supporters for their first Europa League group game in the upcoming season.

Additionally, the club has received a separate €5,000 (£4,300) fine for “improper conduct.”

These disciplinary measures aim to address and deter such behavior in order to maintain a safe and respectful environment during football matches.
