Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix has expressed his desire to join Barcelona, but the financial implications of the transfer could prove to be a challenge for the Catalan club.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta is interested in signing Joao Felix, and his agent Jorge Mendes has a close relationship with the club. However, fitting Atletico Madrid’s demands into Barcelona’s salary limit could be difficult.
According to Marca, even a loan deal for Joao Felix would cost Barcelona over €25 million. Atletico Madrid wants the amortization due from his €127 million transfer fee to be covered for that year, which amounts to €16 million. When factoring in his salary, the cost for just one season of having Joao Felix would be significant.
Given Barcelona’s financial constraints, it would be challenging for them to consider deals in the range of €100 million, which is Atletico Madrid’s asking price for Joao Felix. Sport reports that Atletico Madrid would be interested in players like Franck Kessie and Ferran Torres as part of a deal to reduce the cost, as they are not crucial to Barcelona’s current plans under manager Xavi Hernandez.
Earlier reports suggested that the only viable option for Barcelona would be a loan with an option to buy, but even that scenario appears highly unlikely.
Considering that Joao Felix may not fulfill a specific need for Barcelona and may not even be a guaranteed starter, investing significant resources in the Portuguese player would come as a surprise.
