Rio Ferdinand sends message to Man Utd players after ‘absolute massacre’ at Anfield

After the “absolute massacre” at Anfield, when Manchester United lost 7-0 to Liverpool, the club’s players received a message from Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.

Overtaking their previous record, which was set in October 1895, Liverpool won their biggest game ever against United.

In contrast, United’s 7-0 losses to Wolves in 1931, Aston Villa in 1930, and Blackburn in 1926 were their joint-heaviest competitive defeats.

The Red Devils suffered utter humiliation, and Ferdinand, a former United defender, posted his reaction to the match on his YouTube channel.

“We’ve been pulverized,” he said. “That was a massacre. An absolute massacre at Anfield. That’s all you can call it. The players will be feeling embarrassed.”

He added: “[Erik] ten Hag, man… If I was him, the team would know I would be upset but one of the main points would be do not let this derail your season now.

“You come back in tomorrow, you get back to work, you look at what went wrong and then you go to Southampton at Old Trafford.

“You make sure that you give the fans something to shout about after the embarrassment here at Anfield.

“All of you, sit there and let that feeling sink in about how embarrassing and how bad it feels.”

Roy Keane said: “I am worried for Manchester United – Manchester City have dominated them for the past few years, but United have players like Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford who can hurt City.

“Wembley, the atmosphere and the fact that United have been written off – it’s dangerous.”

He added: “People were writing United off against Brighton as if United couldn’t cope against Brighton, who were doing well at the time, but they turned up – and they get over the line in the big games,” added Keane.

“They are a bit better [than they were], but on paper, City are favourites – but that just might suit United.”
