After Ghana’s surprising defeat to Cape Verde in the AFCON, Ghana boss Chris Hughton faced a distressing situation when fans reportedly attempted to attack him.
Hughton, who previously managed Nottingham Forest and Brighton, witnessed his team’s dramatic 2-1 loss in their tournament opener.
The match ended in late heartbreak for the Black Stars, with Garry Rodrigues scoring a 92nd-minute winner.
Frustrated fans were captured on camera expressing their disappointment towards the players and coaching staff.
Following the match, some supporters reportedly confronted Hughton at the team’s hotel, leading to incidents that required intervention from security forces. The exact details of the confrontations varied in different reports.
Journalist Saddick Adams has claimed on social media that:
“One member of the Ghanaian supporters in Abidjan has been arrested for an attack on coach Chris Hughton at the team’s hotel.
“It took the intervention of some Ghanaian diplomats who were around to save the coach. The unidentified man has been handed to the Ivorian Police.”
The claims about the fans attempting to attack Ghana boss Chris Hughton have been contradicted by Muftawu Nabila Abdulai in his own post on X:
“[I’m] told supporter was angry and used foul words on Chris Hughton and security took him away, but he’s not been arrested. In fact, there was no contact with the coach.”
