Scott McTominay has opened up about the key differences between playing for Manchester United and Napoli after his recent move to the Serie A club.
The 27-year-old midfielder, who spent over two decades at Old Trafford, made a £25 million switch to Napoli this summer.
Since joining the Italian giants, McTominay has hit the ground running, helping his new team remain unbeaten in his first four appearances, with three wins and a draw against Juventus.
McTominay quickly made an impact by providing an assist in a match against Monza and scoring in Napoli’s 5-0 Coppa Italia triumph over Palermo.
Reflecting on his time under Erik ten Hag at Manchester United, where he was often used as a squad player, McTominay admitted that his tactical understanding has developed significantly since working with Napoli coach Antonio Conte.
In an interview with Radio CRC, McTominay said, “The two leagues are very different. In Serie A, there’s a much heavier focus on tactics—knowing your role within the team and your connection with teammates is crucial.
Physically, you can make your presence felt, but the Premier League and Serie A are distinct in their approaches.”
He added, “The tactical work in Italy is more intense. I’ve been impressed by the level of the Italian championship and the technical ability of both teams and players, especially my teammates.”
McTominay played 255 matches for Manchester United, scoring 29 goals and providing eight assists. However, his former club currently sits 13th in the Premier League, while Napoli, under his influence, are leading Serie A after six matches.
