Gary Lineker slammed Sir Alex Ferguson’s comments on Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday.

Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League at the hands of Atletico Madrid, losing 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate. Renan Lodi’s back post header late in the first half was enough to seal United’s fate.

But in truth, Ralf Rangnick’s side did not cause the travelling ‘keeper and defence enough problems, leaving Ronaldo and company exiting competition. But before the game, some old comments from the legendary United boss on Ronaldo caught the attention of Lineker.

Sir Alex claimed in 2015 that Lionel Messi was just a ‘Barcelona product’. He added: “People say who is the best player in the world? And plenty of people quite rightly say Messi – you can’t dispute that opinion.

” Cristiano Ronaldo could play for Millwall, QPR, Doncaster Rovers anyone, and score a hat-trick in one game. I’m not sure Messi can do it. I think Messi is a Barcelona product.”

Having seen the resurfaced quotes, the Match of the Day host took issue with them, responding: “This is nonsensical. I know we don’t tend to look beyond these shores very much, and I’m sure Sir Alex is being supportive of one of his own, but even as recently as this summer, Messi almost single-handedly won the Copa America for Argentina. They’re both greats.”
