Villarreal outlasted Manchester United 11-10 in a penalty shootout to win the 2021 Europa League after a 1-1 draw in the Final on Wednesday night at the Stadion Miejski in Gdansk, Poland.
It marks the first European title in Villarreal’s history and it could not have come in more dramatic circumstances, with Villarreal converting all 11 of their penalty attempts, the final one from goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who then saved counterpart David De Gea’s penalty to secure the crown.
Villarreal vs Manchester United highlight
GOAL! | Villarreal 1-1 Man United | Edinson Cavani 55’
Huge slice of luck – but United are level!
It must’ve been pretty tight on the offside because there’s a lengthy delay but the goal stands.
HALF-TIME | Villarreal 1-0 Man United
Work for United to do. Gerard Moreno’s 30th goal of the season is the difference between the sides.
GOAL! | Man United 0-1 Villarreal | Gerard Moreno 29’
It’s that man!
United are all at sea as the free-kick is swung in from Parejo on the left and Moreno – who has scored 29 goals this season – is unmarked to run onto it and finish. He’s scored 30 now.
After a painful run of four successive semi-final defeats, including against eventual winners Sevilla in this competition last season, the Premier League runners-up finally ended that particular hoodoo despite a second-leg defeat in an 8-5 aggregate goal-fest against AS Roma and will now look to finish the job in the northern Polish city of Gdansk on Wednesday night.

Villarreal vs Man Utd team news
Villarreal could welcome back Tottenham loanee Juan Foyth and winger Samuel Chukwueze for their first major European final appearance, but former Leicester midfielder Vicente Iborra remains sidelined with damaged knee ligaments and has not played since December.
Ex-Spurs and Watford midfielder Etienne Capoue is available after being suspended for the semi-final second leg against Arsenal, meanwhile.
As for United, captain Harry Maguire was included in the 26-man travelling squad announced on Monday despite missing the last four games with an ankle ligament injury suffered at Aston Villa, but was always considered a huge doubt and now seems set to miss out again.
In his most recent Maguire update, Solskjaer said the player would probably jog and try to join in with a final training session in Gdansk on Tuesday night, though he ended up sitting out the session.
Anthony Martial and Phil Jones (both knee) will not travel, though midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred are both fit.
