Which World Cup team is the worst at penalty shootouts?

They say penalty shootouts are a lottery, but a lot of World Cup teams won’t agree. More often than not, the sting of a side’s elimination on spot kicks makes more of a media dent than the successful team’s progression.
For every Fabio Grosso, there’s a Roberto Baggio. For every Giazka Mendieta, there’s an Eloy. For every Eric Dier, there’s a Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle, David Batty, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard – you get the idea.
When the pressure piles on, these teams crumble time and time again in men’s World Cup penalty shootouts.
European heavyweights England, Italy and Spain share the ignominious honour of having the worst World Cup penalty shootout records in the competition’s history, each being beaten three times.
England in World Cup penalty shootouts
The mere mention of the words ‘penalty shootout’ will draw the most violent of glances from England fans.
They seemed to vanquish a lot of demons at the 2018 World Cup when they beat Colombia on penalties in the last 16, but they were again made to suffer from the spot in the Euro 2020 final when they were beaten by Italy at Wembley.
Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle were the original heartbreakers for the Three Lions faithful when they missed against West Germany in 1990, while eight years later failed attempts from Paul Ince and David Batty saw Argentina progress.
England made it three consecutive World Cup penalty shootout defeats in 2006, going out to Portugal as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all missed. They had been beaten by the Ricardo-inspired Selecao the same way two years prior at Euro 2004.
Italy in World Cup penalty shootouts
Italy are the only other side along with England to have been beaten in three consecutive World Cup penalty shootouts. With all three coming in the 1990s, you can imagine it isn’t a fondly remembered era for Azzurri supporters.
Things were going swimmingly against Argentina in 1990 before misses from Roberto Donadoni and Aldo Serena ended that semi-final shootout. Four years later, Roberto Baggio’s infamous spot kick coupled with failed efforts from Franco Baresi and Massaro saw Italy beaten by Brazil in the final in Pasadena.
Demetrio Albertini and Luigi Di Biagio were the villains as Italy went out to France in the 1998 quarter finals, but it ended up being fourth time lucky when the Azzurri won the tournament in 2006, beating Les Bleus 5-3 in Berlin.
Spain in World Cup penalty shootouts
Spain came up against some focused Belgians as they tasted defeat in their first World Cup penalty shootout, with Eloy the only player to miss from ten efforts.
La Roja were involved in both of 2002’s penalty shootouts. Their one victory to date came when they unconvincingly saw off the Republic of Ireland 3-2, with Juanfran and Juan Carlos Valeron both missing.
An incredibly controversial quarter final against South Korea where Spain wrongly had goals chalked off eventually ended in their elimination, Joaquin’s miss from the spot proving decisive.
They wouldn’t feature in a shootout en route to victory in 2010 but were eliminated by that method eight years later against hosts Russia. Koke and Iago Aspas were the unlucky players to miss that day.

How to watch the FA Cup in US, Canada & Australia

We’re getting to the business end of the FA Cup with 32 teams remaining in with a chance of lifting it at Wembley later this year.
It may not be important as it once was, but clubs remain hugely keen to win the competition and fans from all over the world tune in to see who does so.
Here’s how you can watch it on TV if you live across the pond in USA or Canada, or down under in Australia.
Victories over Blyth Spartans, Oldham, Farnborough and most recently Coventry to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup for the first time since 2000.
The Welsh side have enjoyed some historic upsets in the competition, having previously beaten Arsenal and West Ham in the past.
Wrexham are unbeaten in 22 games but that streak will be put to the test against Championship high-flyers Sheffield United. The Blades are second in the league and looking firm favourites alongside Burnley to get promoted to the Premier League.
Both sides are in excellent form and it’s due to be a riveting encounter at the Racecourse Ground.
ESPN has secured the rights to broadcast the FA Cup in the US with most of the games being exclusively streamed on ESPN+. However, some ties are shown on the free-to-air ESPN channel. For those that want to watch all of the available games, you will have to pay $6.99 a month or $69.99 annually to subscribe to ESPN+.
Up north in Canada, Sportsnet own the right to show the tournament and will broadcast multiple ties in each round. You’ll be able to view some games on their cable channel, but will have to subscribe to their streaming service, SN Now, if you want to catch all of them, and that will cost you $34.99 per month or $249.99 annually.
In Australia meanwhile, watching on a streaming service is the only option with Viacom buying the rights in late 2021 and showing the FA Cup only on Paramount+, a service that requires a monthly $8.99 subscription.
Every fourth round game will be available solely on ESPN+ in the US, with each of them featuring English coverage and five – Fulham vs Sunderland, Preston vs Tottenham, Manchester United vs Reading, Brighton vs Liverpool and Wrexham vs Sheffield United – being shown in Spanish too.
Sportsnet are showing every tie of the round on their streaming service, SN Now, with Man Utd’s game also on their main TV channel, SN1.
Paramount+ will also show every match of the fourth round in Australia.

Atletico Madrid Confirm Signing of Kieran Trippier From Tottenham on 3-Year Deal

Atletico Madrid have confirmed the signing of Tottenham right back Kieran Trippier for a fee believed to be worth £20m plus add-ons.
Trippier’s future at Spurs was in doubt following the conclusion of the 2018/19 season and he was linked with Serie A sides Juventus and Inter.
However, Atleti have now confirmed the deal after Trippier passed his medical on Wednesday, revealing the England international has signed a three-year deal with the Spanish giants.
In a statement on their website, Atleti stated: “Atlético de Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement for the transfer of Kieran Trippier. The English player, 28, signs for the next three seasons.”
Trippier is Atletico’s latest signing this summer, with the club having already signed Marcos Llorente, Felipe, Hector Herrera and Joao Felix among others. The former Burnley man will compete with Santiago Arias for a starting spot under Diego Simeone.
Trippier enjoyed a fine 2017/18 campaign and an even better World Cup, but his form tailed off the following season.
The deal leaves Tottenham with Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters as their recognised right backs, while Juan Foyth is also an option having played in that position for Argentina at this summer’s Copa America.

Brighton vs Liverpool – FA Cup: TV channel, team news, lineups & prediction

Brighton host Liverpool in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, a fortnight after dismantling Jurgen Klopp’s side at the Amex Stadium in England’s top flight.
Roberto De Zerbi’s south coast hot-shots sit two points and three places above Liverpool in the Premier League table at the halfway stage of the season, underlining their advantage with a 3-0 triumph against Sunday’s foes two weeks ago.
Jurgen Klopp described that “horror show” as “the worst game I’ve ever seen from a team of mine”. Liverpool have kept consecutive clean sheets against Wolves and Chelsea after “everything went wrong” against the Seagulls.
Here’s everything you need to know about one of the standout fixtures from the FA Cup fourth round.

Brighton team news
Alongside long-term absentee Jakub Moder, Levi Colwill (quad) and former Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana (muscular) will sit out the upcoming cup tie.
Moises Caicedo is entirely fine physically but has been asked by the club to take a step back for the rest of the January transfer window. Bids from Arsenal and Chelsea lured the integral midfielder into a public declaration of his desire to leave, prompting the club to take action and effectively sideline Caicedo for Sunday’s match.
Brighton predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Sanchez; Veltman, Dunk, Van Hecke, Estupinan; Mac Allister, Gilmour; March, Gross, Mitoma; Ferguson
Liverpool team news
Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino are still recovering from calf injuries while Virgil van Dijk and Arthur Melo are “a couple of weeks” away from shaking off respective hamstring and thigh problems.
Luis Diaz is a longer term absentee with a serious knee issue while fellow forward Fabio Carvalho is a doubt after missing this week’s training. Back-up centre-back Nat Phillips has been laid low with a cold in the buildup to Sunday’s fixture.
Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Gomez, Robertson; Keita, Bajcetic, Thiago; Salah, Nunez, Gakpo
Prior to the riotous victory on the south coast, De Zerbi led his new side to a thrilling 3-3 draw against Liverpool at Anfield on his debut in the dugout. Brighton haven’t only proven to be prolific against the Reds, rattling in 19 goals across six matches since Christmas Day.
Liverpool have drawn a blank in two of their last three games. Klopp was keen to highlight the “little step” forward represented by last weekend’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea but Liverpool are still struggling to rediscover anywhere near the same edge that took them to two titles – including the FA Cup – last season.
It’s highly unlikely that Klopp would allow his side to be as outrageously open as they were on their previous visit to the Amex. And without Caicedo snaffling around in midfield, Brighton may have a tougher time muzzling Liverpool going the other way in a contest which could lead to a rematch at Anfield.
Prediction: Brighton 1-1 Liverpool
